I am a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Political Science at the University of Basel. My research focuses on electoral politics in young and old democracies. Most of my research has explored the impact of the ethno-nationalist divide in party competition. More recently, I have started to explore the dynamics of electoral participation in young democracies in my Ambizione project founded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Within this research project, I investigate how corruption, populism, the weak institutionalization of the party system and the legacies of the former authoritarian regimes shape voter participation in Eastern Europe and Latin America. Previously, I was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Bern and the University of Konstanz. I received my PhD at the ETH Zurich.
